Job Title: Library Public Service Specialist
Location: Dallas, TX
Pay Rate: $20.00/hour
Schedule: Tuesday Saturday, 8:30 AM 5:00 PM (30-minute lunch), Potential Evening Shifts: May be required on an as-needed basis (11:30 AM 8:00 PM), Saturdays: Library closes at 4:00 PM
About the Role
The Library Public Service Specialist plays a vital front-line role in supporting the community by offering reference assistance, customer service, and technical help throughout the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys connecting with the public, promoting educational resources, and ensuring the library remains a welcoming, functional, and inclusive space. This specialist will work across all eight public service floors, which each focus on distinct subject areas, and will support general reference and collection needs as required.
Key Responsibilities

Provide assistance at library reference desks, responding to customer inquiries and fulfilling research or media requests.

Conduct community outreach, including visits to schools and public spaces, and engage with all patrons, including members of the homeless community.

Maintain and organize collections by shelving, sorting, weeding outdated materials, and setting up displays and exhibits.

Monitor the facility for maintenance needs, report equipment issues, and ensure a clean, functional environment.

Assist patrons with the use of public computers and library systems, offering troubleshooting and guidance on digital tools.

Deliver exceptional customer service and support throughout all interactions with library visitors.

Manage materials processing, donation intake, and ongoing upkeep of library inventory and systems.

Perform additional duties as assigned to support the library s mission.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor s Degree (required)

Experience: Minimum of 3 years in customer service or working in a library environment

Strong customer service and communication skills

Familiarity with reference tools and library research methods

Comfort with public engagement and outreach

Proficiency in troubleshooting computer systems and software

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic public setting
